Seasonal Affective Disorder = SAD
The winter blahs, anyone?
Yesterday it was about 45 degrees when I picked up the kiddies, so we booked it over to the playground before the sun went down. It was good for them. Until 1 minute later Owen fell down and got a bloody nose.
Sigh.
It's hard when it gets dark so soon, it's too cold to take them outside, and there is no break until spring break.
The Most Depressing Day of the Year, according to TIME magazine, is Jan. 24.
January is a rough month overall, I think.
Do you agree??

it's a booky book world, people!
So, I've been reading a lot lately. I think that's a sign that I am feeling good, productive, and happy. At least that's what I tell myself.
I started with Pat Conroy's South of Broad. I love me some Pat Conroy. This one was very Conroy-esque with a lot of drama, family problems, and beautiful Charleston scenery. I actually thought it was typical of Conroy, with a new dramatic twist on every page. Very dramatic. I give it 3 out of 4 thumbs up.
Next, I read the latest John Irving book, Last Night in Twisted River. Johnny boy has been a favorite author of mine for a while (well except when i went to hear him speak he turned out to be a total asshat). This book was a good one, too. It started kind of slow for me, and there was a lot of technical jargon about log-rolling (whatever). There was also a random politcal rant towards the end that I agreed with 100% but found it odd that it was in there. Loved the storyline. Loved the characters. I give it 29 out of 30 cupcakes.
I am just starting this book by Jodi Picoult, Handle with Care. So far, it's good. It's about a family that has a daughter with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) which is a bone disease that causes a person's bones to be brittle and break easily. I will let you know what I think of it when I finish.
Anyone else read anything good lately?

I just finished this next book by Wally Lamb. I loved his books I Know this Much is True, and She's Come Undone. This book, The Hour I First Believed, was great. It was about Columbine and how the tragedy affected the family of Mr. and Mrs. Quick. I really enjoyed this book. How it all tied together, the description of the Columbine disaster, and how people work through trauma were all elements I loved about it. I give it 7.9 out of 8.2 stars.

winner winner chicken dinner
Yesterday I threw 3 frozen chicken breasts into the crockpot, dumped a bottle of bbq sauce on them, covered on low for 6 hours, and then shredded it with a knife and a fork. Put that yummy goodness on a bun, serve with salad and a can of baked beans. Delish!

thankful
As I sit here in my heated house watching the rain fall outside, holding a sweet, sleeping baby, I can only feel thankful. Listening to the boys and their Daddy play downstairs, laughing and singing is bringing a smile to my face. Yesterday we drove by a huge house and I asked the boys if they wanted to live in a big house one day. Owen said, "Mommy! We DO live in a big house!"
We are so lucky.
I just spent a while looking at the high-res pictures of the devastation in Haiti on cnn. Over 100,000 people have died. This natural disaster is bad, bad, bad. We will be giving to the Clinton-Bush Haiti Fund here. You can also give to the Red Cross. There is a way to give via text messages. I hope you will donate to help our fellow humans.

celery is an awesome teether!
It's also awesome when the waitress puts the tray full of delicious chicken wings in reach of baby and she gets hot sauce all over her hand. At least she is getting the experience necessary to be a lifelong lover of B-Dubs.

lookwhatimade!lookwhatimade!lookwhatimade!!!
OMG! Look what I made! I have been in to hand sewing lately, and after making a few pairs of babylegs (google it if you don't know what they are...) for Charlotte, I found this awesome website where I got the pattern for these baby booties!!! Don't you love them!! Since it's my first pair, they are a little rough around the edges - I put the ribbon on backwards first, and the fabric I used isn't the greatest, but they are so cute! Can't wait to make another pair. I also hand-sewed them because we have no place to put a sewing machine (plus I am overwhelmed at re-learning how to use one), which took a little longer. If i could use a machine, I could crank out a pair of these in every color!
And a cute picture of Miss charlotte this morning wearing her cute tutu outfit that Tonya sent her. :) Love it!

interesting....
My dear hubby just sent me this article. Any of you that know me well know that I am a strong opposer of the death penalty. This article shows how some other smart people think it's a load of crap, too.
“Law students who take first-year criminal law from 2010 on,” he said, “will learn that this same group of smart lawyers and judges — the ones whose work they read every day — has said that the death penalty in the United States is a moral and practical failure.” -NY Times.com
Duh.
